I'm not necessarily a believer in the philosophy of 'no smoke without fire'. Certainly when the guns were fired at Jean Charles de Menezes and the smoke cleared, it was clear the man was a completely innocent individual (despite the Met's shameful attempts to suggest otherwise).
But, despite the heavy smoke surrounding Michael Martin, I can't help but think there is certainly more than a whiff of sleaze emanating from the Speaker's corner.
His resilience, which borders on arrogance, in staying in his post and heading up an enquiry into the expenses system would be impressive if it wasn't so depressing. At the very least, the question marks above his head should lead to an easy decision in him standing down from this enquiry to avoid any possible conflict of interest.
There is an air of untouchability around MPs and their expense claims these days with only the most shocking of abuses being punished. And even then, the removal of the whip from Tory Derek Conway and repaying a fraction of what was fraudulently 'earned' is hardly a punishment that fits the crime.
It is heartening therefore that Holyrood and MSPs are waking up to this tasteless arrangement and making the changes that are necessary to the expense system in Scotland.
Independence has a lot of pros and cons, but it may turn out to be the best way to rid ourselves of an increasing number of politicians who can't seem to help sneaking their fingers into the publicly owned cookie jar.
Crisis? What crisis?

Where there is power, there is corruption.
I'm confident that Scotland will eventually catch up (if it's not on a level playing field already...)
And the speaker is hanging on by his short and curlies. But, he will hang on.
There is a powerful lobby on his side in the House who are desperate to retain him.
He's defo toast at the next election.
...and what the fook is going on at yer mate Kezia Dugdale's blog?
Friends email required?
Is this not the manifestation of the paranoid and power drunk state of Labour?
In the immortal words of the great Bill Hicks, ‘you are free to do as we tell you’…
no free speech…addiction to information gathering…unable to accept criticism…moves to gain total control…
All that’s left now is for her to ‘mis-place’ all my details…
(and she has screened the last post I put on her blog, grrr)
I think there is a bit of a difference between a girl getting maliciously offensive comments in her inbox and supposed "moves to gain total control"
It's a shame we can't leave comments for everyone's favourite Labour blogger but I totally see why Kez has taken the decision she has.
Toast at the next election will do for me with regard Martin. I'd rather see him chased out of office but I fear you're bang on the money with your comments....
Fair enough and, believe me, I am not trying for cheap shots. A blog loses all its interest in no discussion is allowed...
The 'total control' comment was to be taken with a pinch of salt...I just can't bring myself to indulge in 'smiley faces'...
Haha, you can learn to love it... ;)
I suspected there was some tongue in cheek action going on there.
Can't agree more about a blog losing something with no comments allowed. Even the 'email verification' policy that most have now is a bit of a pain.
I want to see comments as they go up, not 6 of them in one tranche...
