Labour councillors = Lemmings on a cliff

It seems there's a bit of a stooshie growing up north with protests taking place against the cuts brought in by the SNP. On the surface of it, it looks like worrying signs for the Nationalists. But let's dig a little deeper:

Labour councillor, Willie Young, has said that "his party had always successfully managed the budget"

Audit Scotland, independent financial watchdog, stated in March that Aberdeen Council's finances are 'precarious'.

It seems the two statements above can not both be true and I for one would almost always believe Audit Scotland over a local councillor.

John Swinney meanwhile has agreed that the council faces a set of difficult circumstances and problems "have been building up over a number of years and no effective action has been taken by previous administrations of the Council to rectify this situation."

So this is a perfect example of three things:

(1) The SNP taking a responsible line and reducing spending where necessary.

(2) The Labour Party not only in denial regarding their part in creating a financial mess but with blinkers on they seem quite happy to continue spending whatever the damage to the Balance Sheet.

(3) There will always be ignoramus' who protest at reduced spending but are unable to see the full picture.

A question for Labour councillors. If the finances are currently "precarious", why are they so content to push spending further and raise Audit Scotland's alarm levels to 'disastrous'...? If they go walking by a cliff-face, do they have a barely controllable urge to jump off?

Labour haven't been in administration in Aberdeen since 2003. Perhaps the Nat's should look to their friends in the Lib Dems and Kate Dean who they are continuing to prop up.

Jeff,

Forgiveness may be need from you for this but needs must an' all...

I am still reading your friends blog. She has asked several questions in her last few posts. How is one supposed to answer?

Come on, come on - the Liberals have run Aberdeen since 2003; the Nats are now propping them up in a Coalition!

Taking responsibility payments for senior posts means taking responsibility!

It seems a dangerous assumption was made on my part!

Whoever was in charge of the council (and it's abundantly clear it was the Lib Dems), costs have clearly been spiralling out of control for some time. Audit Scotland state this quite clearly.

The SNP may well be "propping" up the Lib Dems, it's how you get things done, but to protest at the SNP's "cuts" (or sensible financial decisions as I like to see it) is naive and reckless.

And Fred, comments are now up on Kez's blog. I just hope everyone's nice to the Labour lass or they'll be gone again just as quick!

I actually asked her about that 'questions but no comments' thing. I think it was an oversight, hence the reappearance of the comments option...

Where exactly do Audit Scotland state quite clearly that: "costs have clearly been spiralling out of control for some time"??

I think you should provide the link and precise location of this statement and/or accept that you've got this story badly wrong.

The link is in the main body of my blog article.

If Audit Scotland describes the financial position of a council as precarious, I would say that costs have been spiralling out of control for some time.

You, on the other hand, are welcome to disagree...
