It has been highly entertaining watching the unionist party hacks and press researchers try to find ways to chop the SNP down to size after their conference at the weekend, despite the nationalists enjoying a 40% public rating, a confidence-building series of independence polls and an army of well-known Scots from various backgrounds queuing up to compliment Alex Salmond and his cabinet in the Scotland on Sunday.
Amongst these public figures are well known unionists and labour backers who, albeit grudgingly, have said that the SNP are doing "surprisingly" well.
So with this in mind, the various blog entries smack of desperation and even a delusion that I am simply amazed hasn't worn off yet. I agree there is a place for effective opposition, even in the face of a good policy for the sake of playing devil's advocate, but an opposition without the "effective" adjective is reduced to someone just having a needless moan.
Top billing - Matt's Mic (who, to be fair, did an awesome compering job at the Obama rally).
Matt (Labour) seems to be swinging rather wildly at the SNP's track record hoping something will stick. 1,000 extra police, reduced class sizes and efforts to help first time buyers of homes incur his rather odd wrath. The more amusing complaint is the dumping of the student debt which he is waiting for as "promised" by the SNP. Of course, the fact that the SNP are in the minority and no other party supports this policy (including Labour who I believe Matt works for) then I guess there'll be a bit longer to wait to halt those student loan payments.
Two Doctors (Green) make a similarly odd choice of protest by focussing on Salmond's "make Westminster dance to a Scottish jig" line. Similar to the Labour/Lib Dem administration of 8 years, I don't understand why this Green party member is ashamed of fighting for Scottish interests? I'd go as far to say that the main reason for Salmond's tremendous popularity at the moment is down to the fact that he's taking Westminster head-on in areas where past administrations have just lied down to Tony Blair and Gordon Brown's wishes.
Scottish Tory Boy (umm, Tory) moves into even more bizarre territory by trying to claim that Alex Salmond is trying to stage a revolution! Despite the SNP's constant insistence that they have no problem with the Queen reigning over an independent Scotland, Tory Boy is concerned that a (somewhat trivial) picture of Alex Salmond on a fake £20 note suggests something more sinister. Perhaps the SNP should also be charged for counterfeiting?
Thankfully, the small (PR-conscious?) band of Lib Dem bloggers have seen sense and know that there's no point throwing mud when it just won't stick. There are no disparaging stories from their end of the blogosphere.
But to the rest I would say keep going, Mondays can be a difficult day but your light relief is certainly helping me keep a smile on my face...

It was good meeting you on Saturday- glad to see at least one SNP blogger is infact a real person, rather than a literal 'blogging machine'!
Anyway, enough of these niceties. Back to some 'Nat-Bashing...!'
You used the fact that you're a minority government as an excuse to not delivering your pledge to cut student debt, which is absolutely ridiculous, (although I was very excited to get a mention...!)
But seriously, the proposal wasn't even in your initial budget, and the policy never went to a vote. Infact time and time again, including several episodes of FMQ's, your big man denied it was ever a policy!- Nicol Stephen stood there waving a leaflet while your backbenchers scurried under their seats pretending they'd never seen the leaflets before in their lives. Alex responded by completely avoiding the question.
If it's not Westminster's fault, it's the fact you're a minority government.
The Government has not stuck to its promises. Are they as surprised as me that they won?!
Yep, same to you Matt. Genuine praise on the Obama chat. You'll have to become a famous politician one day as you'll clean up on the after-dinner speaking circuit!
Anyway, for a start, the dumping of student debt isn't "my pledge". As much as I would like to have my student debts written off, it's not a policy I particularly agree with, nor do I agree with a free university education as it encourages students to piss their 4 years up against a wall quite frankly (and many do...)
I agree you should press Alex on not answering questions; i myself find it frustrating at times (though best to dodge than get nailed I suppose!) but why try to pin the Government down on a policy that Labour doesn't support? It just looks silly.
And it's not "blaming" minority government, it's being sensible about what can and cannot be passed through the chamber. Why waste time preparing a bill that is destined to be voted down?
The promises that they have supposedly not stuck to are a wishlist of what they would have done with unfettered powers. Minority administration, as the SNP have learned to their credit and Labour are taking aaaaages to pick up, changes the goalposts a little bit.
And finally, if the SNP are doing as badly as you suggest, why are they riding so high in the polls?
Well I'm glad you have something to keep you busy!
I agree that a week is a long time in politics and this may not be relevant in two years.
That being said I'm inclined to think that parties in government are more often held to statements from long ago than Opposition ones.
It all depends how the election is going. If the SNP are still doing well in the polls they'll either mention it or no-one will. If they're net, I'll bet the Opposition keep bringing it up.
Still as you'll say a long way and lots of psephology to go!
Yeah, I see what you're saying but I still don't they'll bring it up; it would serve to remind how popular the SNP Government once were (assuming they do nosedive in the next 2 years). I'm sure, Labour being Labour, they'll be happy to concentrate on the doom and gloom of the present...
The Lib Dems were told to go out and prepare for Government once upon a time and even mocking that looks a little empty as there's nothing wrong with aiming high. Or at least there shouldn't be...
Anyway, I honestly think the SNP are canny enough to carry this momentum into the Westminster election so I won't be too pessimistic that Alex misspoke at the weekend.
PS not sure how you transferred our discussion into a different post but no dramas...!
Sorry - no idea how that happened! I tend to get confused when dealing with numbers above ten, so that was probably the cause...
