Glasgow East - Political Earthquake!!

And there it is!!! Can you feel it??

John Mason has won Glasgow East!

Incredible, incredible stuff.

John Mason - 11,277 votes
Margaret Curran - 10,912 votes

Indygal (Anne McLaughlin) was the campaign coordinator and by all accounts put in a Herculean effort. Alex Salmond backed his candidate to the hilt visiting the constituency 11 times while Gordon Brown hid down in London. Team SNP pushed and pushed and pushed and in the end they inspired and made all the difference. I can't imagine how satisfied the SNP footsoldiers will be in the morning. Unless any hangover takes over, of course.

Words defy me really. Scotland has been spun on its axis. Glasgow turned inside out. I honestly thought it would take not the next election but the one after that before the SNP could take another seat in the Glasgow area.

I predict 2015 and the real answer is 25th July 2008. (Another dodgy prediction that will delight Scottish Tory Boy).

Anyway, all I can say is, today is a very, very, very good day to have joined the SNP.

Good night!

It's certainly an amazing result and one which will have implications beyond Glasgow and Scotland.

I wonder if anyone old enough can remember what happened the night of the Hamilton and Govan by-elections i.e. does this feel as significant or just the same?

The next question is obviously what this implies for the SNP. Does this mean that Scotland is on the cusp of independence, or solely that Labour is unpopular across the UK and this was a chance for voters to express that? i.e. is it really different from Govan, etc?

No doubt there's numerous commentary to come over the next few days. Who knows, some of it might even get beyond partisanship and into considered thoughts!

A fantastic result. Congrats to all. And to me, as I had £50 on the SNP to win.

"while Gordon Brown hid down in London."

And when the going was getting tough, near the end, he jumped on a flight to the middle-east, put a bullet-proof vest on and got himself a machine gun.

Things are not looking too good.

I am one of those foot soldiers who today, is pleased as punch. I have had so many texts messags of congratulations from friends I feel as though maybe it was ME who became an MP.

I am elated for the party. Everyone worked really hard. Now, my grand plan to become First Minister one day begins... :)
