    Misquotes

It's taken a while for me to mull it over and be sure of my suspicions but I am now adamant that Alex Salmond has been misquoted and severely misrepresented in the media over the past week.

There has been a lot of comment surrounding Alex Salmond's supposed suggestion that an independent Scotland would have released £100bn of funds in order to save HBOS. Indeed, as it was included in The Guardian and other leading broadsheets, I assumed in good faith that that suggestion had been made by the First Minister.

As far I can see, this is as close as Alex got to making such a claim:

The First Minister: The case for hard-pressed taxpayers' cash might have been better made in respect of Northern Rock. The £100 billion to which Wendy Alexander referred is a liquidity availability—the £100 billion that the Bank of England made available on Friday. Would that it had been made available a week earlier—we might not be in the situation that we are now in.

There we have it. No mention of an independent Scotland. Indeed the mention of the Bank of England surely scuppers the suggestion that it's a solely Scottish solution being proferred.

The First Minister was merely putting forward the valid suggestion that Central Bank credit could have been extended to ease HBOS' through a troubling period, not dissimilar to action taken by Governments around the world. By all means disagree with the suggestion but do not populate a myth by putting words in Salmond's mouth.

Perhaps this shows that Labour is competing in the media battle or perhaps it shows that newspapers need to employ a higher calibre of scribe, but when you can no longer believe what is printed in the supposedly independent press you have to think we have reached a worrying low.

Wow, an SNP supporter finding out how the media "misquote".

    Oh the Joy!

Never mind that this was the game the SNP played in opposition.

Oh dear, how can anyone do this to Wee Eck and Nippy Sweetie?

Such is the way for those who stick their heads above the parapet, there will always be someone wanting to throw stones at the target.

    Welcome to the real world.

Bit confused by your post Ray. Of course competing parties will always try to negatively spin, or completely misrepresent as in this case, what the 'other lot' have said.
The salient point made in Jeff's piece is that we had supposedly independent newspapers falling over themselves to do the same thing.
By contrast, the SNP have never had the benefit of a media willing to do their dirty work.

The Guardian, Herald, Sunday Herald, Scotsman and others all reported Salmond's £100 billion contention.

You have merely quoted him using the same number (the significance of which is explained here) in a different context. It doesn't demonstrate a misquote.

Don't you think, given how much ridicule Salmond received over this, that if he had actually been misrepresented he would have set the record straight?

    Hi SU,

That absolutely was my first reaction. I first saw it on Kez's blog and laughed thinking she had her millions and billions mixed up. I then thought with some dismay that Kez is a sharp tack and wouldn't make such an error, a thought backed up by (as you say) leading papers mentioning it.

But I'm afraid that's not enough, I've still not seen him say anything of the kind related to the ridiculous notion of an independent Scotland shelling out £100bn to save HBOS.

The argument that just because Salmond hasn't defended himself and Alastair Darling/Herald/Scotsman are laying into him means he must have said something is insufficient. Perhaps he is rising above a silly spat over who said what and why?

Indeed, I asked someone at the Labour party for what the quote was and that one I put in my blog is what they gave me back which is why I wrote that blog post.

I note that your own comment doesn't have any quotes from Salmond either. Do you know exactly what he was supposed to have said?

I find it very bizarre indeed, on all sides.

That's because I don't have a direct quote, and I agree that it's bizarre. Salmond spins like a dervish, but he's far from stupid and rarely (if ever) misspeaks. On balance, and in the absence of any other evidence, you're probably right, but it is strange that he hasn't denied it.

    Ah! He did deny it!

Tavish Scott: The First Minister also claimed that as a Prime Minister or President of an independent Scotland, he would have ordered his central bank to lend £100 billion to sort out the problem. Until now—to answer a different criticism, in fairness—the Scottish National Party has said that it would not have a central bank, let alone that such a bank would be under the personal control of the head of the Government or that it would have £100 billion ready to lend out.

Alex Salmond: Tavish Scott knows what the SNP's policy is. That might have led him to question the report in a particular newspaper. There was clearly a misunderstanding of the reference to the liquidity fund.

Take a look at "Manufacturing Consent" or "Guardians of Power: The Myth of the Liberal Media" for an exploration of our 'independent' media.

There's a short video at YouTube that summarises the problem:

medialens.org is a UK organisation trying to tackle this problem.
