Photograph of the Year

Let's not mess around.
Alex Salmond is pictured here with the world's most powerful and influential women, indeed he had a 30 minute discussion with Hillary Clinton, seemingly chiefly focussed on renewables and environmental concerns.

Already opposition party members are reducing the meeting to a joke but the advantage of a First Minister that aims high is that he will regularly pull off the jackpot.

On the face of it, Alex Salmond earned his salaries and then some this week.

Am I missing something? You’ve described this as “a great moment for Scotland”, but what exactly did the meeting achieve?

I imagine it opened up a dialogue between the Scottish Government and the US Administration.

I don't remember you being so deliciously cynical when McConnell and McLeish had a brief conversation with George W Bush in 2005 and 2001 respectively.

I quite agree with you Jeff.

The overweening cramped character of much of the negativity is distinctly uninspiring.

Let's face it if the meeting was such a joke it would never have happened ... I'm sure Madame Clinton could have found something to amuse herself with if the meeting was really pointless.

I think you might be missing something SU, the symbolism alone is achievement enough. As Alasdair says, i doubt they talked about baseball and shopping for that 30 minutes and Clinton wouldn't suffer fools gladly.

And Anonymous, I don't think I'm being cynical at all, delicious or otherwise. Furthermore, this blog started in 2007 so I reckon I can be forgiven for not mentioning former FM meetings in 2001 and 2005 respectively. I am unaware of such meetings infact, though not doubting the veracity of your comment.

LPW, thanks for the link. I'll stick it up on the blog-list soon. (Can't do it now, off to the London National Portrait Gallery, the life of a tourist lives on!)

Jeff, i think anon was talking to SU not you...

Whoops, seems strange apologising to an anonymous person but I'll do so nonetheless.

Leaving tomorrow at 1pm Fred, fancy an early lunch?

London National Portrait Gallery is cracking if anyone is in any way interested.

I thought Nicola was the world's most influencial woman - followed by Helen Liddell and the wee one off the Krankies

But Henry McLeish met the then President Bush - by your logic does that make him a better FM?

Jeff said...

Anon, no it doesn't.

Hillary Clinton is 10 times the man George W Bush is.
