Not that I'm suggesting that it wasn't within the party's reach before but the news that Adam Ingram is to stand down at the next election will be welcome for the SNP.
A new candidate never tends to poll as well as an incumbent even if Adam Ingram has been embroiled in an 'outside earnings' issue.
No doubt another All Women Shortlist's stooshie will be on the cards for the Labour party in this constituency which will only assist the SNP's chances further.
Douglas Edwards stood for the SNP in 2005 but I have been unable to find if this will be the case for 2010.
Either way, East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow has become one to watch while the general election preparations get underway.

I think it objectively bad news for the SNP that Ingram is standing down. He is soiled good big timn so many fronts, Mt Iraq, Mr Trident2, but espcially Mr Forgerafter the latest letter forging scandal in te local press. Anyone, any gender would from a Labour standard bearers point ofview be a better bet. Did he jump of was Adam pushed?
But the SNP has a good chance for sure. Just less good today as it was yesterday I think
I know there are a lot of different factors that will come into play this time, not least the lack of an incumbent, but can you really see us taking a seat that has a majority of almost 15,000?

It's common knowledge locally that Cllr Michael McCann (who was also embroiled in the forged letters) has been groomed as the Labour heir apparent in the seat so an AWS is unlikely to go down well.
It's a little surprising that Ingram has announced it now, rather than holding off till close enough to an election that the local branch could nod McCann through as the candidate without interference.

A LABOUR former defence minister, who earns more than £115,000 from outside business interests, has failed to declare a family firm that could be used to avoid tax.
Adam Ingram, 62, the MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow, set up the company with his wife, Maureen, last May as a vehicle for his consultancies and directorships.
Under Commons rules he should have declared his interest in Adam Ingram Advisory Ltd to the parliamentary standards commissioner. He said on Friday that his failure to do so was “a misunderstanding on my part, which I am now immediately rectifying”. Hours later, by coincidence, the MP told his local Labour party that he would leave the Commons at the next general election.
