Willie Bain to contest Glasgow North East

Labour have, as expected, selected Willie Bain as their candidate for the Glasgow North East by-election.

On the back of the European election results and Willie being a 'clean skin' untainted by the expenses scandals, he has to go into the contest as the favourite.

Also, per The Herald:

The SNP is also due to select its candidate this week after the frontrunner, Glasgow councillor Grant Thoms, unexpectedly withdrew his nomination.

So we can expect more by-election headlines as the media catches up with the news that there has been a one week delay in this process.

Well of course he's untainted by the expenses stuff - he isn't an MP. The same will presumably apply to the other candidates, so it's not an advantage.

I didn't say it was an advantage. Given this is rock solid Labour territory and Willie's never been a politician my point was more that there is no distinct disadvantage that Labour has that could skew the end result away from a comfortable Labour win, as we saw in the Euros.

Jeepers Jeff. Even I can't keep up, and I live here...

Was there really a campaign in Glasgow NE at the Euro's apart from one leaflet going out? This seat will now get picked over to the end degree.

Favourites can lose - remember Glasgow East (Labour) and Glenrothes (SNP). Also keep an eye on an unusual amount of uptakes of postal votes in a seat with a transitory population. :)

Excusez-moi, Marcia. I have a substantial collection of (admittedly not very exciting) twitpics that prove there was quite a lot of (admittedly SNP) activity in Springburn at the Euros. Many shots of high-rise flats on - by turn - the hottest and wettest days of the year, at the time. Not grumbling. (Grumble, grumble.) :-P

No dis-respect to anyone in GNE. That was a Euro campaign and was fought mostly on TV/radio etc as you only speak to a small amount of people during these elections. You now move to a ground war doorstep campaign and if you have tilled the ground well you can harvest a victory. If Dundee can do it, so can you.

Wille 'Clean Skin' Bain, was also Michael Martin's election agent. So not as completely untainted as the electorate might perhaps hope.

He's also the CLP Secretary and again too close to the ruling Martin dynasty...

I look forward to Paul McBride QC standing for the Tories. He's bound to meet many of his former clients, many of whom may have been honest...honest.

Does Gordon Brown or anyone really know anything about William Bain, the Labour candidate in Glasgow North East?

He is curently employed as a law lecturer in London at the London South Bank University but there are no other proper biographical details about him. As a lecturer you would think he did research and attended academic conferences but there is no record of these on Google. He is a mystery man. Does anyone know:

- what did he do between 1995 and 2003?

- where does he live when he is working at LSBU?

- what does he do in his non-work life?
