Brown should take Campbell's advice

After reflecting on tonight's Guardian poll I could not help but recall recent pearls of wisdom that Alastair Campbell bestowed on the nation regarding the enquiry into the Iraq War.

Alastair's theory was that because vast swathes of the public had made their minds up about why the War took place and whose fault it was then there was no point in conducting a public inquiry.

With the Labour position not budging above the high 20s for a long, long time, it is abundantly clear that the Iraq War is not the only thing we have made our minds up on. The last month has been extraordinary with Euro elections, MPs expenses, a no-holds barred battle over public spending and Cabinet resignations yet the Labour position has not budged up or down from 27%.

Adopting the philosophy of Burnley's finest ever spin doctor, why should the Labour Government bother trying to convince us that they are worth voting for when we are clearly stuck in our voting ways?

In hour-long interviews, it is said that a decision is made on whether an applicant will get the job in the first five minutes. Labour's 5 year term condensed into one hour means that we are now into the final ten.

We're going through the motions with applicant Gordon Brown, we're checking the clock, we're doodling on the side of the page, we're wondering if we should have a Snickers or a Kit-Kat when we get back to the desk.

Not only that, the poor sod on the other side of the table understands the situation and is acting desperate and embarrassing to try to pull out the stops.

No, we should pull the plug on this clear waste of time. A 14% gap is what we have today, it's what we had last month, it's what we had last year and it's at the very least what we will have in May when the General Election is finally, finally called.

Let's give this guy his coat and get the one whose already got the job in early.
