New YouGov Poll - Tories 14 up

There is happy reading for David Cameron in tonight's YouGov poll as his Tory party nudge above 40% again:

Tories - 41%
Labour - 27%
Lib Dems - 18%

Brown's personal rating is now the same as John Major's in 1996 which sounds particularly ominous.

Note this though:

In 1997, Labour won the election with a national lead of 12.5% and enjoyed a 253 seat majority.

In 2009, if the Tories win a 14% national lead they will see a meagre 82 seat majority.

Time for First Past the Post to go.

(The Scottish section of the poll should be out in a day or two...)

Abolishing First-Past-The-Post and replacing with PR would lead to "weak government" according to DC. That's a myth that should be exploded.

Every FPTP Government reaching the end of it's time in office is weak - Brown, Major, Callaghan, etc...

What takes real strength is co-operating, compromising, and collaborating, and REAL leadership, not dictatorship. These things are required if politicians are to recover from the disgruntlement sweeping the UK. That would definitely mean PR. And if politicians play their part in forming responsible government, then we, as citizens should be compelled to vote. Legally!
