Just a quick post to mark the sad passing of Scottish Unionist's blog, a blog so good that I often found it quite frightening how he cut to the essence of some of my beliefs and tore them to shreds. Or at least appeared to at the time.I don't think there's anyone on the Scottish blogosphere who has argued so persuasively and logically in favour of the Union, not to mention find the weak links in Team SNP and expose them for all they're worth.
The biggest loss though is this.... the 'Cybernats' will now be spewing goodness knows what on The Scotsman pages unchecked! Heaven forbid....!!
We will now no longer know what Scottish Unionist makes of the SNP adventure as it progresses into the future (though the offer of a Guest Post will always be open). I would have liked to have known SU's thoughts on Salmond's speech today for example but, alas, we are denied that luxury. (For the record, my thoughts are over at The Steamie)
So, farewell Scottish Unionist. It may be optimistic of me to say so but haste ye back anyway...

It's no doubt a big loss for 'cyber-unionism', it'll be interesting to see just how right wing those that fill the void will go and how far they will proclaim their party allegiance to the conservatives (I'm thinking Sm753 and rufus, etc)

On AM2, er, um ?
As one of the (hopefully more constructive) Cybernats who used to spend an inordinate amount of time sparring with SU (formerly AM2) on the Scotsman and Herald boards, I had to rub my eyes in disbelief at some of the eulogising Jeff was indulging in there. The one thing I would say in AM2's favour is that he was usually courteous, and he certainly didn't deserve some of the abuse that came his way (no-one does) - although he didn't half use that abuse to his advantage. At times 70-80% of his posts seemed to be based on the premise that the abusive nature of Cybernats offered a kind of window into the soul of Nationalism - neatly glossing over the very similar abuse that was coming in the opposite direction from other Unionist posters. I just couldn't see the point of his Cybernat obsession anyway - if someone is acting like a twit on an internet message board, most readers are intelligent enough to spot that for themselves, but they're also intelligent enough to realise that twit doesn't speak for the entire party or movement.
I also have to disagree with Jeff that AM2 argued his corner with any great intellectual rigour - when his case was weak, he unfailingly resorted to sleight-of-hand debating tricks, including a great deal of innuendo. As a strict non-partisan (other than partisanly opposed to the SNP), he was essentially a willing coathanger for just about Nat-bashing wheeze under the sun, regardless of origin. However, the loss of any leading Scottish blog is a great pity, and if he did receive genuine threats that’s utterly appalling. On past form, though, I suspect he won’t stay ‘retired’ for long – as I recall, we’ve been here before.
perhaps he had an inkling of today's SOS story regarding the Orange Order jumping into bed with Labour. Even SU might have realised that the game's a bogey at that point.
Of course this moves me up to 10th spot on the Total Politics Guide to 'active' Political blog. I hate how seems to always happen to me in Sep/Oct.
Oh well James, if nothing else it's nice to be nice.
Seems like a final decision to me but only time can tell.

Yes, his quoting of the idiots on the Scotsman site was a bit tiresome, since we don't even know how much of their crap is posted by genuine Nats or by agents provocateur - I always remember a supposed Cybernat post, quoted by SU, which averred that we should be independent because England is full of "fag Jews".

Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, he has as many monikers as he has tangents to his paranoid circular arguments. He is still on the forum he cannot leave it due to his obsession. His blog is a work of madness as is his Busting the Myth blog or what ever it is called. We must be thankfull that the keyboard obsession keeps him of the street. I am betting that he will be back in the near future on his rancid wee blog. As to your "cybernats spewing out opinions," are you sure you are not him? You sound very similar. Would you close down the opinions of cybernats, or come to that cberBritnats? Inverted snobbery methinks.

It really does the Nationalist argument no favours in claiming SU has multiple monikers. Despite being a nationalist myself, I was accused of being Nikostratos at one point in a certain cybermoron's rant, due to my name.
I pointed out how idiotic that person's argument was, and how cringeworthy their vitriol was, and they haven't been back on the Scotsman since.
People really do come out with the most childish crap on that site.

In what way does stating the truth do the nationalist argument no favours? How desperate you are as you throw mud at the nationalists, how frightened you must be to see Scotland of her knees and heading for independence, it must chill the marrow of the unionist zombies.
AM2 is still on the forum as an agent of the union. His goal is to disrupt and deflect any debate that gets going. A task that he has totally failed in as he once more announces a retirement to try and cover his tracks. Such is the condition of his paranoia that he finds it impossible to let go, but must keep morphing to try and hide the fact he there 24/7, hammering his keyboard in his madness.
As has been said, at least he is of the street.

I for one will miss one of the few voices that actually told the other side of the story. There are far more people who favour the Union who just don't let it dominate their lives though, so I don't think it really means anything in the context of an argument that "statusquoism" is dead.

Do NOT know what comments YOU where reading on the Scotsman and Herald. BUT AM2 regularly had his unionist arguements blown out the water.
AM2 was the man that heralded the strength of the British economy,when I was pointing out over priced housing being paid by credit cards and banks stuffed with worthless American debt. Staring into the ABYSS I think I said.That's what pushed me to Nationalism,the economic REALITY . Norway is in a hell of a better position than the UK today.ANY (BA)economist left or right could see that coming a mile off, AM2 COULD NOT!!
This was the man that made "fraudulent" or "ignorant" economic statements on the Scotsman. Trying to twist S&P ,and FITCH ratings etc and thier effect on the Scottish economy. UNfortunately I was building the datafeed interfaces for S&P, FITCH ,MOODYS and the London and Amsterdam Stock Exchanges and even the Federal Reserve at the time. I showed his "economic wisdom" to the BA's (Business Anaylists) we could not stop laughing all day , thank you AM2 or SU,you can take your red nose off now,DON'T GIVE UP YOUR DAY JOB. Selling second hand cars I believe ,as well as second hand economic policy.

This is also the man who attacked me for saying the economic arguement was secondry to the right of Scotland to be a nation. I was mercilessly attacked "Braveheart" etc..
