We really are entering dangerous terrain when a party to celebrate the Homecoming festivites on Scotland's patron saint's day is deemed an "insult" and "a party political stunt". The oddness of Iain Gray's petulant claims is compounded when you learn that Homecoming was Labour's idea in the first place!I admit the tartan and shortbread rhetoric of Homecoming should have been drastically dialled down and a more modern edge tacked onto core events such as the Clan Gathering and St Andrew's Day festival but come on, Scotland isn't allowed to have Scottish celebrations any more?
What if Venice's Biennale was deemed too Italian and had to end? Or France's Bastille Day deemed too Nationalist? Or Pamplona's running of the bulls too overtly Spanish? What a sad loss any of the above would be.
It's nonsensical to say that Scotland can't hold Scottish-based shindigs because it might make people think about where they live and how they see themselves. Labour - the anti-cathartic party. It doesn't make for a good slogan (particularly because it looks a bit like "the anti-Cathcart party" which Tom Harris would never go for)
The gradual, seemingly unavoidable descent into the silliest of arguments forever orbitting the question of independence is surely reason enough to have a referendum on the matter and put it behind us for a generation or, perhaps, forever.
Then, finally, we can get the kilts on, paint our faces and have some fun without any petty political squabbles be it in an independent Scotland or still as part of the UK.

Nice one Jeff!
Check out the Homecoming Finale at the SECC. There's no way that's a pure shortbread tin and tartan affair.

There's a lot for us to be proud of, even if 74 years of Labour rule hasn't managed to make much of our natural resources.
Oh, I agree there Jim. Didn't want to be too critical, guess i sounded a bit harsh though. Yeah, I'm still hoping to go to that gig actually. Should be good and I really hope it sells out.
Is it astounding, in any other country in the world Ian Gray and the other carpers would be denounced a yet here in Scotland there views are given some form of legitimacy through the piss poor media we have.
Let's get this straight, Ian Gray is saying that to celebrate St Andrews day is an 'insult'
Breathtaking
Strange because I thought Labour's new tactic was to "reclaim the saltire" and all that goes with it from the SNP.
Don't think they have quite got the hang of that yet!
Actually in Belfast the atavastic Unionists finally allowed, yep allowed a Paddy's day only if it was bereft of Irish symbolism. Surely these anti-Irish bigots don't have anything in common with our own London-Scots, do they?
Jeff I'm struggling to think of an Irish blogger in say Dublin arguing that he had no problem with St Patricks day if they would just modernise it a bit and lose the Guinness and shamrocks.
Unionists require the cringe to keep Scots thinking their own things are pretty crap and unworthy. I'm no particular fan of tartan or shortbread but they're a valuable part of Scotland's tourist brand.
Why stop at tartan and shortbread? Why not scale down bagpipes, fiddle music, The Highlands , Gaelic, Hogmanay, Golf, Clans and Rabbie Burns while you're at it?
Let's confine ourselves to Scotland's role in the empire, brass bands in Scotland and the complete works of Iain Rankin instead.
the point is, everyone knows we have more to offer than these stereotypes, but the fact remains millions of people have that image of us.
the point is to simply get them here, then show them everything else that scotland has to offer, which as we all know extends far beyond tartan and shortbread
I agree with the Patter merchant above me - in Tourism you've got to play to your strengths.. Show them Nessie and tartan and get them here; then we can show them a modern and dynamic European country like any other (bar the fact we're not a sovereign country, obviously!).
I'm still trying to think just what justification Gray is using for this, and I can't get it. Surely this is their opportunity to 'reclaim the Saltire' and to embrace St Andrew's Day and pull the rug from under our feet? I'm very interested to hear what Mr Murphy thinks about it...
Iain Gray has consistently shown that he is the best man for losing Labour the next Scottish parliament election, and losing a fair few seats to the SNP next general election as well. His mastery of "cutting yourself off at the knees" has been truly breathtaking.
I do wonder sometimes if there are several SNP infiltrators in Labour who pushed him into the hotseat, because I really cannot think of anyone less capable of giving Alex Salmond at least a little bit of a challenge!
He's little more than your typical backbencher hack on autopilot, only that he finds himself thrust into a bigger seat. Get back Big Wend and make it interesting again!
What is it with our Unionist political class (and unfortunately many Unionists in general) that they have to nurse such a deep inferiority complex mixed together with some unsightly elements of self-loathing? It is unhealthy.
As has been said before many countries in the world would do anything to have a such a distinctive brand image that the name "Scotland" carries. Whatever your political persuasion is, that is something all of us Scots should be proud of.
