Raging Against the Wrong Machine

There is a (seemingly diminishing) school of thought that television shows like X-Factor are the new opiate of the masses with contestants seemingly intoxicated by the idea that life won't be worth living if they don't make it into Simon Cowell's 'top 3'.

So the theory goes, this has dangerous repercussions for the vulnerable wannabes flinging themselves at Simon's feet in their thousands not to mention an impressionable watching audience who amend weekend plans to make sure they catch the show and work out who has the best dress, Cheryl or Dannii.

While I fully agree with this synopsis, I still think there's nothing wrong with sprinkling a little 'opium' here and there into our lives to brighten things up a bit, from time to time.

Added to the saccharin frivolity that is this year's X Factor Christmas single is the news that Rage Against the Machine's 1990's 'Killing In the Name Of' track has emerged as the 'anyone but' protest record in the face of a probable number one for Simon Cowell et al.

Wouldn't it be great if that nice wee lad Joe McElderry was merely number 2 in the charts on Christmas Day and we could, at least temporarily, end Reality TV's domination of the festive holidays?

Isn't #RATM4XMASNO1 a campaign that the whole country can unite behind as we celebrate our togetherness mixed with a dash of rock nostalgia?

Well, not quite...

Rage Against the Machine and Joe McElderry are both backed by the Sony BMG label and that puts rather a different Christmas gloss on this apparent feel good story of the day.

Some clever executive at the recording company has clearly decided to yank the country around using Twitter and Facebook to sell truckloads of records and people are lapping it up, breathing and inhaling in that opium like they just can't get enough.

It is an arms race with only one winner - Sony BMG. Now how Christmassy is that?

If people really want to back a Christmas record and truly thumb their noses to the established powers that be, get out your guitars and record a track along these lines for a true rage against a truly regrettable machine:

'His name's Gary McKinnon,
and what has he done,
hacked into a mainframe,
and had a little fun

And so he was arrested,
with his life now undone,
let's hope he's set free,
while still fairly young'

A very Merry Christmas,
And a happy New Year,
Let's hope it's a good one,
Without any fear

His mother is pleading,
his fiance waits,
MPs fake their concern,
while his Asperger's deteriorates

And so now it's Christmas,
with McElderrys and SuBos,
a man faces life in prison,
just for looking up UFOs

Jeff, I demand that you record and release this song!

With MacNumpty on guitar and Dugdale on drums it could go all the way!

I'm up for that!

Brilliant!

Clever wheeze by the record exec.
Great little ditty though!

and an appalling shambles of British justice to extradite one of our citizens in this manner.

I prefer "The Penguin Song" anyway...

As a wise man once said: RATM and "Joe" are two cheeks of the same arse.

I still think the Bohemian Rhapsody by the Muppets should do it.

sometimes i think you just take the opposing popular side so you have something to post about. day upon day I'm loosing faith in you. Do you actually blog the truth or do you convince yourself on false beliefs to come across as "none judgmental". Its becoming tiresome and I hate to say it but far too predicable. I expected better from you.

I think it's about the quality of the song, not the company who owns it. You're being a bit too cynical there.

I'm with Bucket. The idea isn't "raging" against big business, its against manufactured pop and the guarantee of a No.1.

Have nothing against wee Joe - he's a cracking singer - but the song is awful and the idea that it is guaranteed to be #1 rankles a bit.

Totally agree on the McKinnon track though. Speak to Cowell, he'll get you a slot on The Political X-Factor...

Surprised to see you advertising the scum that is "universality of cheese" on your website....

Ha, thanks Sean. I fear in that line up I'd be the weakest link. Maybe MSPs could form a choir?

Hey I will sing the Gary Mckinnon song if I get a band to back me up.

Allan/LH/Colin M,

Fair enough, I won't be switching careers into songwriting just yet but for less than 5mins work I'm pretty chuffed, there isn't much that rhymes with UFOs!

Colin M,

That's a shame you think that I don't personally believe what I blog about. I'm not too sure what I can do about that (nor what my motive would be?) but thanks for letting me know anyway.

Cheers.

While it may fit the song, Asperger's Syndrome doesn't cause any type of deterioration. Indeed, given that Mr McKinnon has been living with it for 44 years, he should have a number of good coping strategies which allow Asperger's suffers to proceed with a normal life. If anything, the symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome will have lessened over time.

One of the key issues in this whole affair is actually the spectacular mis-understanding displayed by the media as regards Asperger's.

Hythlodaeus said...

Sorry, I didn't mean to spoil the fun, but as a personal issue, it does rub me and many of my friends who are also Asperger's sufferers the wrong way to see McKinnon being portrayed in the way that he is.

No, fair enough H, such inaccuracies shouldn't be propagated.

I'll leave the poetic license unaltered but point definitely taken.
