A Laws unto himself

I've just read the big news of the evening and, no doubt, the bank holiday weekend.

It seems David Laws, George Osborne's chief axe-man at the Treasury, has claimed more than £40,000 to rent a room owned by his partner. The news (if it is news, I was certainly unaware though) that David is gay is, or at least should be, by the by given it is no concern of anyone's but slicing tens of thousands of public funds into your pocket just because you have the opportunity to do so means that you simply can't go on with the 'we're all in this together' drive of cutting jobs, cutting public sector salaries and cutting spending in general.

I do wonder if there will be an attempt to conflate the news of his sexuality with the news of the expenses scandal, offsetting the sympathy he may garner for the former with the fury he will attract from the latter. I sincerely hope not. David should resign, step well away from the limelight, answer to any investigations that are deemed necessary and only then try to return to front bench politics if he still fancies it and Cameron and/or Clegg will still have him.

For me, the worst part is that there was so much scrutiny over expenses last year, during the nadir of the whole debacle, and David Laws must have reflected on his arrangements and known they were improper and against the 2006 rules which stated that MPs cannot claim money for renting property from "a partner". Not fessing up then has blown apart any claims that this is a genuine error. The excuse that he just wanted to keep his relationship a secret may be understandable but it is also insufficient.

David Laws, I hope you enjoyed your time serving in the coalition Government, you only have hours or days left. An apology is nowhere near enough I'm afraid.

As for the Liberal-Conservative coalition, it will live on, but it's just received its first body blow.

UPDATE - There seems to be a consensus growing amidst Lib Dem activists that this is a hatchet job by the Telegraph, using the expenses story to 'out' David.

A person is of course entitled to keep their private life private, irrespective of what job they do, but that right does not extend to using your private life to break rules that date back to 2006, rules that must surely exist for a reason.

The Liberal Democrat party has past form too, George Lyon employing his partner Flora Boyd in clear breach of the EU parliament's rules, and that was even after the MEP checked.

There has also been a suggestion that David Laws is actually saving us money which is just bizarre given a random person is having his mortgage paid off on our behalf and, again, completely overlooks the fact that there's rules in place.

Lib Dems may be self-proclaimed champions of fairness but that doesn't mean you can just pick and choose the rules that adhere to you and those that don't.

Ah'm speechless. Efter this past year. Is the man stupit?

He made the decision to pocket a lot more than 40k if my sums are correct.

Claiming the person he was sleeping with was not a partnet after 8 years of sharing the sheets is unacceptable.
Live with him secretly by all means, but claiming money with him knowing he is a partner in all but electricity bills is fraud.
All that free dosh was hard to turn down............

Clegg should say sorry mate you are great as a minister but time to go as it would be hypocritical to hav eyou stay after we claim to clean politics up.

Not even borderline this; this is against the rules, knowingly. either on eknows on e is living with someone for 8 years or not. paying his partner's mortghage up may be a jolly wheeze but when you get caught it is time to go.

He should have come clean before.

His sexuality is of no concern to me, his fraud assuredly is. he should have seen this coming but must have tyhought by denying they were togetehr to the Comons nobody would catch him out.

Intensely private, ha ha......private with a financial outcome based on denial and keeping things unknown.
And the fact he has cut his utilities claims dramatically since receipts were required also shows this was no accident, just think of a figure and let's claim it was the former philosophy.

GO! Straight red card. I wisj a by electrion wa sheld in th e seart, he should not be allowed to hang around like a bad smell. Which is what he is.

Good one Sophia.

If Cameron sacks him it will inevitably sew divisions in the coalition but does Clegg have the position to sack a Cabinet member?

Basically, Laws would have to go voluntarily.

Another question though, who would replace him? Cable? Ken Clarke?

Usually sleaze (and I mean his £40,000 worth of sleaze) takes a little longer than a couple of weeks to rear its ugly head.

It seems that the New Politics isn't that different from the old ones....if a little quicker off the mark.

Cameron should really pop the LibDem's cork an' offer it tae Simon Hughes. That wid mess wi' their heids.

He wid be shite at it tho.

If Laws goes tho, does his replacement have tae be a LibDem, even if not in Chief Secretary's chair?

redcliffe62 is right - the fact the Lib Dems are supposed to be "cleaning up politics" is by itself reason enough for him to go.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the first casualty of the Lib Dems' "sack your MP" legislation was a Lib Dem?

His sexuality has absolutely nothing to do with any of us and especially the manks in the media, however stealing £40,000 is in the public interest and as such he should be sacked from the government and stand down as an MP.

Sophia asks a good question! Who does get to sack him? This should be interesting.

Squeaky bum time for the libs and for David Laws, literally lol.

Why has the Telegraph waited until now to release this?

Why have they only asked form him to 'step aside' to allow the investigation to be conducted.

Tory dirty tricks already?

It all started so well.....

He ocht tae be out on his lug. I dinna care that he's gay, blue, taw or Martian - thae rule wis broken an he kent it.

He has resigned.

And Danny Alexander has taken his place.

And the new Secretary of State for Scotland is...

Michael Moore. I like his films. ;)

The Scottish Secretary will be anyone but John Thurso, who actually did so in Shadow.

Had Laws 'fessed up last year, this would have been forgotten by now.

Meanwhile, a pleb goes to gaol for benefits fraud.
