That's because I don't have a direct quote, and I agree that it's bizarre. Salmond spins like a dervish, but he's far from stupid and rarely (if ever) misspeaks. On balance, and in the absence of any other evidence, you're probably right, but it is strange that he hasn't denied it.

That absolutely was my first reaction. I first saw it on Kez's blog and laughed thinking she had her millions and billions mixed up. I then thought with some dismay that Kez is a sharp tack and wouldn't make such an error, a thought backed up by (as you say) leading papers mentioning it.

But I'm afraid that's not enough, I've still not seen him say anything of the kind related to the ridiculous notion of an independent Scotland shelling out £100bn to save HBOS.

The argument that just because Salmond hasn't defended himself and Alastair Darling/Herald/Scotsman are laying into him means he must have said something is insufficient. Perhaps he is rising above a silly spat over who said what and why?

Indeed, I asked someone at the Labour party for what the quote was and that one I put in my blog is what they gave me back which is why I wrote that blog post.

I note that your own comment doesn't have any quotes from Salmond either. Do you know exactly what he was supposed to have said?

I find it very bizarre indeed, on all sides.

You have merely quoted him using the same number (the significance of which is explained here) in a different context. It doesn't demonstrate a misquote.

Don't you think, given how much ridicule Salmond received over this, that if he had actually been misrepresented he would have set the record straight?

Bit confused by your post Ray. Of course competing parties will always try to negatively spin, or completely misrepresent as in this case, what the 'other lot' have said.
The salient point made in Jeff's piece is that we had supposedly independent newspapers falling over themselves to do the same thing.
By contrast, the SNP have never had the benefit of a media willing to do their dirty work.
